ASU's Mitchell named SoCon men's runner of the week
9/24/2008 12:26:12 PM

Appalachian State University men’s cross country runner Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was tabbed Southern Conference Runner of the Week, announced the conference office Wednesday morning. This is the first award for the men’s cross country team and for Mitchell this season.

Mitchell, a junior for Appalachian, is coming off his best performance of the season. He led the No. 9 regionally ranked Mountaineers to a second place finish at the Asics Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The Apps finished second only behind No. 5 regionally ranked Louisville.

He took home a second place finish in race, running the 8k in a time of 24:59, which is his best time of the season. With his performance, Mitchell also posted the fastest time recorded by a SoCon runner this season.

Mitchell and the Apps will continue with their 2008 campaign Friday October 3, as they head to Bethlehem, Pa. to compete at the Paul Short Run.
