Woman Convicted & Sentenced in Fatal April 2012 Crash

37-year-old April Cheri Childers of Granite Falls was convicted of felony second-degree murder and aggravated felony serious injury by motor vehicle today (September 17) in Catawba Co. Criminal Superior Court. Childers was sentenced to no less than 170 months and no more than 216 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction.
The conviction comes in connection to an April 13, 2012 accident in which Childers was the driver of a ‘96 Toyota Camry that crossed the centerline on Highway 127 in the area between 8th Avenue Drive S.E. and 3rd Avenue Drive S.E., running head-on into an ’87 Chevrolet Camaro driven by 32-year-old Ashley S. Britt of Hickory. Mr. Britt was pronounced dead at the scene.
Childers was found to be operating a vehicle while under the influence of controlled substances at the time of the crash. She had previously been convicted of D.W.I. on May 6, 1997 in Burke County; on July 8, 2003 in Caldwell County; and on May 10, 2006 in Catawba County.
Lt. Cam Anderson from the Hickory Police Department handled the investigation and Assistant District Attorney Al Reeder prosecuted the case. The Honorable Marvin P. Pope presided over the conviction.
Childers will be transported to the Division of Adult Correction for processing.
