Governor Pat McCrory announced a number of appointments to the North Carolina Arts Council and the State Library Commission today (July 23).
Among those appointed to the Arts Council is Allen Huffman, a retired physician from Catawba County. He and his wife, Barry, are avid Catawba Valley pottery and Southern contemporary folk art collectors. Huffman has served as president of the founding board of the North Carolina Pottery Center in Seagrove. He currently serves on the executive committee for the Lake Norman Folk Art Festival. He will serve a three-year term on the council.
The Arts Council advises the secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources on the study, collection and dissemination of arts information and provides direction on how to assist local organizations and communities in the development and sustaining of arts resources. The councilís board also advises on the exchange of information and promotion of programs between public and private organizations, and how to provide opportunities for citizens across the state to experience and benefit from the arts.
George Wood of Lincoln County is among the governorís appointees to the State Library Commission. Wood recently retired as county manager of Lincoln County and has served as a city, town and county administrator. He will serve on the commission for four years.
The commission advises the secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources on library matters. It is also responsible for the evaluation and approval of plans for public library development, library cooperation and plans for federally funded library programs. The commission has 15 members.
