Local Tennis Players will Attempt to Break Two World Records
7/19/2013 5:04:05 PM
The Greater Hickory Tennis Association will sponsor an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for continuous tennis play. The world-record breaking attempt will take place from September 27 - 29 at the Lake Hickory Country Club.
George Bolter, Allen Finley, Dr. Bill Geideman and Vince Johnson will play continuously for 60 hours in an attempt to beat the current Guinness World Record of 56 hours and 37 minutes, which was set in Australia. Brad Ansley, Finley, Geideman and Johnson held the doubles world record from 2008 – 2011. Tos Rostan and Paul Pruette will also attempt to break the singles world record, which is 61 continuous hours. Rostan and Bolter held the singles world record for several years at 31 hours.
The team will have one five-minute break per hour. The men hope to raise $50,000 that will be used for additional amenities and facilities at the Hickory City Park tennis facility. The improvements would complement the park’s eight newly resurfaced tennis courts. Those courts were resurfaced over the past 17 months.
The event will also raise funds for Coach Kathy Kim’s tennis programs at the Hickory City Park, where over 100 children have signed up for summer tennis camps. Coach Kim is a Hickory Metro Sports Commission Hall of Fame Inductee with 35 years of tennis coaching experience. She was named National Teacher Of The Year by both the U.S. and N.C. tennis associations.
The “60 Hours of Tennis” event is being chaired by Hani Nassar and the team dietitian is Holley Dagenhardt, MA, RD, LDN.
Sponsors, thus far, include Allen Finley Advertising, Catawba Mailing Service, the City Of Hickory, FlexSeason, the Greater Hickory Tennis Association, K-Swiss, the Lake Hickory Country Club, KLINGSPOR Abrasives, Ortho Carolina and Wyke’s Cleaners.
