Morganton Man Accused of Fraudulently Using Debit Card to Pay TV Bill 6/14/2013 7:56:11 AM
64-year-old Robert Louis Lyda of Perkins Avenue in Morganton was arrested Wednesday (June 12) and charged with felony obtaining property by false pretense and misdemeanor financial card fraud.
Events leading to his arrest began on March 3 of this year when the Burke County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a victim who said her debit card had been used fraudulently to pay a $307.11 bill to DirecTV Satellite Services. An investigation led Detectives to establish Lyda as a suspect. He was interviewed, but denied any involvement in the crime.
Detectives obtained a court order for DirecTV's records. DirecTV responded by sending financial records that showed the $307.11 payment was fraudulently applied to an account in the name of Robert Louis Lyda.
An arrest warrant was issued and Lyda was taken into custody on Wednesday (June 12).
Lyda was confined in the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility under a $5,000 secured bond. He was scheduled to make a first appearance in District Court today (June 14) in Morganton.
