Weapons Stolen in Sunday Home Invasion in Newton
4/23/2013 4:41:28 PM
The Catawba Co. Sheriff’s Office is investigating a home invasion that occurred Sunday night (April 21) in Newton, resulting in the theft of 33 firearms.
The incident occurred at the residence of 57-year-old Jimmy Ray Oswalt of 4187 Old State Road in Newton. Mr. Oswalt told Investigators he had fallen asleep on the couch at about 9 p.m. when he was awakened by the sound of a cinder block crashing through the rear French doors of his residence.
Before he could react, three men began to beat him. The invaders tied the victim up and threatened to shoot him in the knee if he didn’t unlock his gun cabinet. Mr. Oswalt opened the cabinet and was beaten some more, possibly losing consciousness at one time.
The men left with 29 long guns and four handguns. They made their escape in the victim’s truck, which was found undamaged on Finger Bridge Road at about 5:15 the following morning.
Mr. Oswalt eventually regained full consciousness and worked one hand free, enabling him to call Police just before 2:30 a.m. Monday. He told Detectives the suspects were all wearing dark clothing, masks and gloves. One man was about 6’ tall and the others were all shorter.
Mr. Oswalt was treated on the scene by E.M.S. personnel. He was not hospitalized.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact Sgt. David Eckard at 828-465-8346.
