One of the bronze statues on the Lenoir-Rhyne University campus was damaged sometime between 5 p.m. on March 14 and 12:15 on March 19.
The baseball bat was taken from the statue of a male baseball player, positioned near the baseball field at Lenoir-Rhyne’s Moretz Sports Athletic Complex. The figure is one of six bronze statues depicting athletes on campus. Four are stationed around the athletic complex and two are in front of the Shuford Gymnasium. The figures were put in place in 2009 as a gift from Charlotte philanthropist Irwin Belk.
The theft was reported to Hickory Police Friday, March 22. No damage estimate was available. An H.P.D. investigation is ongoing.
