Feline Virus Outbreak at Caldwell County Animal Control
3/12/2013 4:48:48 PM

On a temporary basis, Caldwell County Animal Control will not accept cats due to an outbreak of a highly contagious and deadly virus that has killed seven cats in the shelter over the past few days.  Beginning immediately today (March 12), no cats will be accepted through Monday, March 18.

The virus, “Feline Calicivirus” is a respiratory virus that is similar to the Parvovirus in dogs.  According to reports, there are multiple strains of the virus, some more serious than others.  It is exclusive to cats and is not transferable to other animals or humans.

Greg Greene, Director of Caldwell County Animal Control said seven cats died over the past few days in the shelter, and another cat that was showing symptoms was diagnosed with the virus by a local veterinarian today.

Because of the highly infectious nature of this virus, Animal Control has been advised to euthanize the remaining nine cats in the shelter and close the shelter to cats for five days.  The shelter will be thoroughly sanitized in the areas where cats were kept.

The virus spreads very quickly, making it difficult to determine which cat came in with the virus or from what part of the county it came.  Feline Calicivirus is spread through the mouth, blood and feces of the animal.

Animal Control workers have begun sanitizing the shelter today.  The shelter has not previously had an outbreak of Feline Calicivirus.
