The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (3-1) took both games of a doubleheader from Augusta State (0-4), 7-1 and 1-0, in its 2013 home opener Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 7, Augusta State 1
L-R sophomore pinch hitter Katie Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) hit a three-run double while junior third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.) connected on a three-run home run to lead the Bears to the win.
Carpenter's bases-clearing double in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie and gave Lenoir-Rhyne the lead for good.
Meanwhile, Jarman's home run in the sixth inning, her second of the season, rounded out the scoring for the Bears.
On the mound, freshman Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) (1-0) allowed just one unearned run while striking out three batters for her first collegiate win.
Paige Deschaine (Summerville, S.C.) fell to 0-2 on the year after suffering the loss for Augusta State.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 1, Augusta State 0
Carpenter came through again with the game-winning, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh, plating sophomore pinch runner Chelsea Castellanos (Miami, Fla.), as the Bears finished off the sweep of the Jaguars.
L-R freshman Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) improved to 2-1 with the shutout win on the mound. Hoskins allowed just four hits to go along with eight strikeouts in the victory.
Augusta State's Haley Birkle (Gainesville, Fla.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-2 despite allowing just one run on four hits with a strikeout.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to face Mercyhurst (Pa.) in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1pm.
