Fire Destroys Home & SUV in Patterson Community2/8/2013 2:52:39 PM
A one-story, wooden-frame house in Caldwell County’s Patterson Community was destroyed by fire early this morning (February 8). Robbie Wilkie, Caldwell Co. Fire Marshal & Emergency Management Coordinator, says the fire was reported just before 4 a.m. at a home owned by Justin Miles Adams at 2508 Setzers Creek Road in Lenoir.
Adams told Wilkie that he woke up, opened his bedroom door and saw flames in the walls and ceiling around his woodstove, which was in a re-worked fireplace. Adams said after a brief attempt to put the fire out, he escaped through a back bedroom window, went to a neighbor’s house and called 9-1-1.
Adams was not injured. Damages were estimated at $50,000. The home and an SUV were destroyed.
Wilkie says the fire started in the chimney and that the chimney did not have a flue liner. Wilkie explained that in older homes, chimneys were built out of brick and mortar with no flue liner. Over time, the mortar can crack from heating and cooling. Residue can build up and flames can escape through those cracks and ignite any surrounding combustible material, such as wood. Wilkie suggests that anyone using a fireplace and chimney should have a flue liner and should have the chimney cleaned regularly.
Responding to the fire, in addition to the Fire Marshal’s Office, were the Patterson, Valmead and Yadkin Valley fire departments.
