Lenoir-Rhyne men win fourth in a row
2/3/2013 11:08:54 AM

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's Basketball Team (14-4, 7-3) made it four wins in a row with a 91-79 victory over Newberry College (9-9, 5-5) Saturday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.

L-R sophomore guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) was one of five players to score in double figures for the Bears, finishing with a team-high 19 points as Lenoir-Rhyne shot 54 percent (32-of-59) from the field in the win.

Newberry's Quayshun Hawkins (Columbia, S.C.) totaled a game-high 25 points and hit all 13 of his free throw attempts but the Wolves saw their four-game winning streak snapped.

Newberry held a 34-31 advantage at halftime but Lenoir-Rhyne rolled with 60 points after the break and shot 65 percent (20-of-31) in the second half en route to the victory.

Holding a 60-57 advantage with 10:15 remaining, the Bears reeled off seven straight points to give themselves a 10-point cushion at 67-57 capped off by a lay-up from Dillingham and remained in control from there.

Junior guard Jarvis Perry (Willingboro, N.J.) and junior forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) added 13 points each for the Bears, who forced the Wolves into 23 turnovers and 26 percent shooting (six-of-23) from behind the three-point line.

Brunes Charles (Naples, Fla.) totaled 12 points off the bench and Brandon Riley (Baltimore, Md.) scored 10 points as well for Newberry in the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne is now one game behind Wingate, Anderson and Lincoln Memorial, who are all tied for first in the SAC, and will host the Bulldogs on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
