Strickland named SoCon Wrestler of the Week 1/9/2013 12:30:58 PM
After improving his perfect 7-0 record on Sunday against SIUE and Northern Illinois, Appalachian State University wrestling's Zack Strickland has been selected as the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competitions from Jan. 3-8, announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
On Sunday, Strickland gave the Mountaineers four points, earning a major decision over SIUE's Logan Taylor at 165 pounds. The 9-0 major decision was Strickland's fifth victory by major decision of the season.
The redshirt freshman continued his winning ways in his second bout of the day, nabbing a 4-3 decision over Northern Illinois' Dan Burk. With the win, Strickland joins redshirt sophomore Dominic Parisi as the lone Mountaineers to have perfect 7-0 records in duals for the year. The Muncy, Pa. native is currently 17-9 on the season and 34-20 for his career.
The selection is the first of Strickland's career and the first of the season for Appalachian. The last Mountaineer to win the weekly honor was App State standout, Kyle Blevins, in February of last season. Blevins eventually won the SoCon Wrestler of the Year Award.
The Mountaineers continue their conference schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 15 when they host Campbell.
