Skeens Found Guilty; Sentenced to 28 to 35 Years11/19/2012 5:34:42 PM
38-year-old Amie Jo Skeens of Hickory was convicted of two counts of felony second-degree murder, two counts of felony death by motor vehicle and misdemeanor driving while impaired after a four-day trial in Burke County Criminal Superior Court. The jury deliberated for approximately two hours prior to returning the guilty verdicts.
The defendant was sentenced to an active prison term of no less than 340 months and no more than 426 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction, which means she could serve approximately 28 to 35 years in prison.
She was convicted of killing 42-year-old Steven Moody and his son, 19-year-old Kevin Moody, both of Connelly Springs, on October 25, 2011 when she hit the two as they were riding their motorcycles.
Troopers Cody Smith and Dan Souther from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol handled the investigation. Assistant District Attorney Corey Sherrill prosecuted the case with the Honorable Michael O’Foghludha presiding.
Skeens will be transported to the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh for processing.
In a prepared statement, District Attorney James C. Gaither, Jr. said he hoped the conviction would send a message that impaired driving has “horrible consequences and serious repercussions”. The District Attorney also cited the efforts of several citizen 9-1-1 callers and the investigation conducted by the Highway Patrol, the Burke Co. Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Lab.
