Lenoir-Rhyne baseball splits with Kutztown at home3/9/2010 10:08:13 PM
Lenoir-Rhyne (8-10) and Kutztown (Pa.) University (9-2) split a baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field. Kutztown prevailed in the first game by a 13-9 score while L-R salvaged a split with a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
Game One - Kutztown 13, Lenoir-Rhyne 9 (seven innings)
With the scored tied at nine, the Golden Bears scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the win.
The Golden Bears' James Quigley hit the game-winning, solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh inning to break the nine-all tie before Kutztown plated three more insurance runs en route to the win.
Kutztown scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by Jared Frey's three-run home run, for a 9-3 lead.
Lenoir-Rhyne cut the lead in half with three runs in its half of the fourth which included a two-run double by senior catcher Rob Knight before tying the game on senior outfielder Evan Taylor's three-run home run in the sixth inning.
Quigley, Frey and Corey Buletza each finished with two hits and three runs batted in to lead the Golden Bears while Mike Bucklin improved to 4-0 with the win for Kutztown.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior Brian Chandler, a Hibriten grad, fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 7, Kutztown 6 (seven innings)
Junior outfielder Stephen Andrews led off the bottom of the seventh inning with his team-leading sixth home run of the season to break a 6-6 tie and help the Bears manage the doubleheader split.
L-R rallied from an early, 5-0 deficit thanks to senior catcher and Fred T. Foard grad, Brian Dice's bases-clearing double that tied the contest at six in the fifth inning.
Knight (two runs batted in) and Dice (two hits and three runs batted in) led L-R offensively while Jeff Kistle paced Kutztown with two hits and two RBI.
L-R freshman Jose Guilarte improved to 2-0 with the win while Kutztown's Ryan Cassidy (1-1) suffered the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
