Today's NASCAR news:
NEXT STOP: DARLINGTON
Defending race winners Jeff Gordon (NASCAR Sprint Cup Series) and Denny Hamlin (NASCAR Nationwide Series) are in Darlington, South Carolina, this weekend for the final two days of competition before All-Star Weekend in Charlotte May 16th and 17th. In last year’s Dodge Challenger 500, Gordon led just 22 of the 367 laps … but they were the last 22 of the race as he posted the seventh Darlington victory of his career. In tonight’s Diamond Hill Plywood 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race, Hamlin hopes to become the first driver since Jeff Burton (in 2001 and 2002) to win three consecutive races at Darlington. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
HARVICK, BURTON JUST KEEP GOING
A pair of Richard Childress Racing drivers hopes to keep impressive streaks alive this weekend at Darlington. Burton is the only Cup Series driver who has completed all 3,297 laps of competition through the first ten races of the season. And Kevin Harvick has now been running at the finish in fifty-four straight races, four shy of matching his own Cup Series record set from 2002 to 2004. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
MRN RADIO TO BROADCAST JUNE EVENTS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
Lawyers for both sides in the ongoing dispute over broadcast rights to NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide series races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway have agreed to honor MRN Radio’s existing contract through the track’s June race weekend (June 27th through June 29th). An independent mediator will soon begin arbitration to address issues related to the final two years of MRN’s contract. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
TRACK FACTS
► Local NASCAR fans in Darlington will have three drivers from South Carolina to pull for in NASCAR Nationwide Series qualifying later today and the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 tonight. Kertus Davis is from Gaffney, Danny Efland hails from Irmo and Jason Keller’s hometown is Greenville.
► Cup Series drivers Sam Hornish Junior and Regan Smith will take their red-hot Raybestos Rookie of the Year race to Darlington. Through the first ten races this season, Hornish leads Smith by just one point. Dario Franchitti is a distant third, twenty-four points off the pace.
► Ken Schrader originally was slated to drive the Number-70 Haas CNC Racing entry Saturday night at Darlington. But Johnny Sauter, who drove the car last weekend at Richmond and during the two-day test earlier this week in Charlotte, is now back in that ride. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
TRACK INFORMATION: Darlington Raceway is a one-point-three-six-six-mile banked oval. The length of the frontstretch and backstretch is 1,230 feet, the equivalent of about four football fields. Grandstand seating capacity is 63,000. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
DODGE CHALLENGER 500 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES RACE AT DARLINGTON RACEWAY … Saturday, 6:30 p.m. (ET)
► Recap of Last Year’s Race: Jeff Gordon continued Hendrick Motorsports’ dominance of the 2007 season with the organization’s eighth victory in the first eleven events. Rain forced a one-day postponement of the race. The wait was worth it for Gordon, who led just twenty-two laps … but they were the final twenty-two of the day as he notched the seventy-eighth win of his career. Gordon anxiously stalked the checkered flag in the closing laps as his Number-24 Chevrolet had steam from an overheating engine spitting through the overflow valve. Denny Hamlin led the most laps (179 of 367) and finished second; with Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards completing the Top Five.
► Track Position in Darlington: Ninety-one of 104 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races have been won from a starting position of tenth or better, with just five winners coming from a starting position of twentieth or worse.
► Winning From the Pole at Darlington: Eighteen of 104 Cup Series races have been won from the pole position. The last driver to do it was Dale Jarrett in 1997.
► Track Qualifying Record: Ward Burton … 173.797 miles per hour … 28.295 seconds … March 22nd, 1996.
► Track Record, Race average: Dale Earnhardt … 139.958 miles per hour … 3 hours, 34 minutes, 55 seconds … March 28th, 1993. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
DIAMOND HILL PLYWOOD 200 NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES RACE AT DARLINGTON RACEWAY … TONIGHT, 7 p.m. (ET)
► Recap of Last Year’s Race: Denny Hamlin led the most laps and claimed his second straight Diamond Hill Plywood 200 victory, beating runner-up Mark Martin to the finish line by nearly 1.5 seconds. Series points leader Carl Edwards placed third and opened up a 433-point lead in the standings. Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer completed the Top Five in the running order.
► Track Position in Darlington: Thirty-four of forty-seven NASCAR Nationwide Series races have been won from a starting position of tenth or better, with just seven winners coming from a starting position of twentieth or worse.
► Winning From the Pole: Ten of forty-seven Nationwide Series races have been won from the pole position. The last driver to do it was Hamlin, in each of the last two years.
► Track Qualifying Record: Ryan Newman … 170.301 mph … 28.876 seconds … March 16th, 2001.
► Track Record, Race Average: Michael Waltrip … 138.140 mph … 1 hour, 27 minutes, 13 seconds … Sept. 5th, 1992. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES UPDATE
►The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is idle until the May 16th North Carolina Education Lottery 200 in Charlotte. There have been four different winners in five races this year, most recently reigning series champion Ron Hornaday Junior at Kansas Speedway. Todd Bodine, Kyle Busch and Dennis Setzer also have won in 2008.
► Hornaday is leading the standings with 775 points, sixty-one points ahead of second-place Rick Crawford. Bodine, Setzer and Johnny Benson complete the top five. In the Raybestos Rookie of the Year chase, Colin Braun holds a five-point edge over Justin Marks. (John Singler, MRN Radio)
IT HAPPENED ON THIS DATE
May 9th, 1964: Fred Lorenzen drove to victory in the Rebel 300 at Darlington Raceway for the second time in four years, notching the fifth of his eight wins that season. He was sponsored by Lafayette Ford of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and in a throwback sponsorship package this weekend, Yates Racing and driver Travis Kvapil are running a replica of Lorenzen’s paint scheme in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington.
