33-year-old Brandon Lee Abshire of Poovey Drive in Granite Falls and 26-year-old Shawn Forrest Thornburg of Berry Road in Connelly Springs were both arrested Thursday (July 25) by Caldwell County Sheriff's Officers. They're both charged with felony possession of a stolen vehicle. Abshire is also charged with misdemeanor resisting a public officer.
Both men were jailed in the Caldwell County Detention Center. Abshire's bond was set at $18,000 secured, Thornburg received a $15,000 secured bond. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in District Court in Lenoir Monday (July 29).
37-year-old Arnaldo Ortiz Garcia of 12th Avenue N.W. in Hickory was arrested by Hickory Police shortly after ten o'clock last night (July 25) on a felony warrant as a fugitive awaiting extradition to another state. Garcia is wanted by authorities in San Juan, Puerto Rico for homicide -- willful killing of a non-family member with a gun.
Garcia was taken into custody without incident following a traffic stop at the intersection of 14th Avenue N.E. and 5th Street N.E. in Hickory. He was placed in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility under a $2-million secured bond. A first appearance in District Court was scheduled today in Newton.
The N.C. Center for Missing Persons has issued a Silver Alert for a missing endangered man. He is 67-year-old Steven Lawrence McHugh. Mr. McHugh is believed to be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment.
Mr. McHugh is a white male. He is 5' 10" tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has medium-length, gray hair and blue eyes. Mr. McHugh was last seen wearing blue jeans, a flannel shirt, and a blue bandana.
He was last seen at Chase Samaritan Place on Delea Drive in Asheville. Mr. McHugh may be traveling toward the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.

40-year-old Michael Christopher Townsend of Brookdale Place NW in Lenoir was arrested Thursday (July 25) by Lenoir Police Officers. He's charged with felony counts of possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substance along with a count of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Townsend was incarcerated in the Caldwell County Detention Center under $25,000 secured bond. A District Court appearance was scheduled Thursday.
22-year-old Melvin Darrell Robbins of Reid Road in Granite Falls was arrested Thursday (July 25) by Caldwell County Sheriff's Officers. He's charged with felony third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Robbins was released after posting $10,000 secured bond. A Superior Court appearance is scheduled for September 9.
Four suspects have been arrested in connection to a bank robbery in Statesville. According to information released Thursday (July 25) by the Statesville Police Department, 28-year-old Quentin Resean Cowan, 33-year-old Wayne Anthony Williams, 28-year-old Michael Anthony Terry, and 19-year-old Sierra Brooke Goble were all arrested. All four suspects are Statesville residents. They're charged in connection to the July 8 robbery at the State Employees Credit Union on Wilkesboro Highway.
Cowan, Williams, and Terry are all charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle. Terry is additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Goble is charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Statesville Police said in a news release that the credit union was robbed at gunpoint by three men July 8. Approximately ten minutes after the robbery occurred officers found a white Honda Accord which was suspected as having been used as a getaway vehicle. Authorities said the vehicle was found on Wheatridge Drive; it had been taken by gunpoint in an incident that occurred in Charlotte July 5.
The continued investigation of the robbery resulted in the identification of a white 2000 Ford Explorer as the secondary getaway vehicle.
Cowan and Terry were both jailed under $300,000 secured bond. Bond for Goble was set at $150,000 secured. Williams was being held in Burke County on a probation violation charge that dates back to July 11. Williams will be transferred to Iredell County and served with the outstanding warrants.
Cowan was scheduled to appear in District Court today (July 26). Terry and Goble have District Court dates August 14, and no court dates were listed for Williams in Iredell County.
39-year-old Bryan Jeremy Sheperd of County Home Road in Conover was arrested Thursday (July 25) by Catawba County Sheriff's Officers. He's charged with felony probation violation. The warrant is from 2014. Sheperd was detained in the Catawba County Detention Facility under no bond. A Superior Court appearance was scheduled Thursday.
18-year-old Matthew Arthur Decker of Greenhill Lane in Mooresville was arrested by Iredell Co. Sheriff's Officers early this morning (July 25) on felony counts of possession with intent to sell or deliver a synthetic cannabinoid, possession of a synthetic cannabinoid, and maintaining a vehicle to sell a controlled substance. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
He was arrested as Deputies conducted a driver’s license check in the area of Brawley School Road at Chuckwood Road. A silver Chevy Tahoe driven by Matthew Decker was in the vehicle line. As Decker handed a Deputy his license, the Deputy saw a homemade marijuana pipe in plain view.
Decker’s vehicle was searched. Deputies found marijuana in the vehicle's center console. They also found 35 T.H.C. vape capsules in the vehicle.
Decker was arrested on the scene. He was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond. No court date is currently listed.
22-year-old Julius Japri Barnett of 1st Street S.W. in Hickory was arrested by Hickory Police early this morning (July 25) on a felony warrant as a fugitive awaiting extradition to another state. Barnett is wanted by the Battle Creek Police Department in Calhoun County, Michigan for assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
Barnett was taken into custody without incident at an address on South Center Street in Hickory. He was placed in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility with bond set at $50,000, secured. An appearance in District Court was scheduled today in Newton.
38-year-old Elizabeth Kathleen Byrd of 18th Avenue N.E. in Hickory was arrested by Hickory Police at nine o'clock last night (July 24) on one felony count of possession of a schedule II controlled substance.
She was initially arrested in connection to a traffic stop on November 12 of last year. Police found 0.3 grams of methamphetamine during the incident. Byrd was taken into custody on the same date.
She was arrested yesterday without incident at the intersection of 16th Street N.E. and 14th Avenue N.E. in Hickory. Byrd was processed at the Hickory Police Department and then released under a $5,000 unsecured bond. An appearance in Superior Court was scheduled today in Newton.
21-year-old Dylan Michael Carroll of Crystal Street in Claremont was arrested by Catawba County Sheriff's Officers. He's charged on bills of indictment with felony counts of possession of a firearm by a felon and obstructing justice along with a misdemeanor count of false report to a police station. Carroll is also charged with misdemeanor resisting a public officer. He was jailed this morning (July 25) in the Catawba County Detention Facility under $13,800 bond. A Superior Court appearance is scheduled for Friday (July 26) and a District Court date is set for next Monday (July 29).
33-year-old Alicia Renee Stewart of Shad Lane in Catawba was arrested Wednesday (July 24) by Newton Police Officers. She's charged with felony possession of schedule I controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of schedule IV controlled substance. Stewart was detained in the Catawba County Detention Facility under $2,500 bond. A District Court appearance was scheduled today.
31-year-old Ashley Dawn Ramsey of St. Paul's Church Road in Morganton and 31-year-old Jamie Denise Riddle of Vein Mountain Road in Nebo were arrested Monday (July 22) by McDowell County Sheriff's Officers. They're each charged with felony counts of trafficking in methamphetamine and conspiracy to traffic in methampetamine. Riddle is additionally charged with possession with intent to manufacture sell and deliver heroin and schedule II controlled substance.
As part of an ongoing investigation into the possible location of a federal fugitive, investigators with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and Marion Police Department were conducting surveillance Monday afternoon at America’s Best Value Inn, on U.S. 221 South.
Simultaneously, at 2:43 p.m. on Old U.S. 221 South, Deputy Steven McPeters of the Sheriff’s Office stopped a black Ford truck and Cpl. Jerry Lewis of Marion Police Department stopped a blue Honda Civic that left the motel together. Federal indictments were served on the driver of the Ford truck.
Investigators and Sheriff’s Office K-9 Kessy searched the Honda Civic, which authorities say was owned by Jamie Riddle and driven at the time by Ashley Ramsey. The search reportedly resulted in the discovery of 1,188 grams of methamphetamine and 950 grams of a substance believed to be heroin.
The hotel room was also searched and authorities say they found another 50 grams of methamphetamine and 2.7 grams of suspected heroin. All told more than 2.7 pounds of meth and more than 2.1 pounds of the substance believed to be heroin were seized. Bond for Ramsey was set at $175,000, Riddle received a $200,000 bond. They both have District Court appearances in Marion August 14.
40-year-old William Ray Blackburn of 1st Avenue NW in Hickory was arrested Wednesday (July 24) by Caldwell County Sheriff's Officers. He's charged with felony possession of stolen property. Blackburn was released on $5,000 secured bond. A District Court date was scheduled today (July 25).
