24-year-old Robert Torrence Spears of Ed Perry Lane in Banner Elk has been arrested by Burke Co. Sheriff's Officers for felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
Spears was arrested in connection to an incident on June 12 when the Burke Co. Sheriff’s Office took a call regarding a possible road rage incident on Highway 181 near Avery County. One vehicle stuck another vehicle multiple times and it was reported that a shot might have been fired. Deputies in Avery County stopped the vehicle, which was driven by Robert Spears.
A Burke County investigation found evidence indicating that Spears intentionally struck the victim’s vehicle several times with his own vehicle. On July 8, the Avery Co. Sheriff’s Office served Spears with the felony warrant from Burke County.
Spears was in placed in the Burke County Jail on July 9 under a $50,000 secured bond. He was scheduled to make a first appearance in District Court today (July 10) in Morganton.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol also assisted in the investigation.
