39-year-old Dennis Lee Jones, Jr. of Troutman Shoals Road in Statesville and 44-year-old Betty Jo French of Murry Street in Maiden were both arrested by Hickory Police yesterday in connection to a shoplifting incident at Hickory's Valley Hills Mall. Jones was charged with felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of up to half-an-ounce of marijuana, while French faces one felony count of attempted larceny against a merchant by removing, destroying, or deactivating a component of an anti-shoplifting or inventory control device and one misdemeanor count each of shoplifting with concealment of merchandise and possession of drug paraphernalia.
They were arrested when Hickory Police responded to a reported larceny at the Belk store in the mall on Highway 70 S.E. During the investigation, Officers found concealed merchandise, 2.0 grams of methamphetamine, 4.3 grams of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident at the store.
Jones and French were jailed in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility. Bond for Jones was set at $2,500, secured, while French was held under a $1,500 secured bond. First appearances in District Court were scheduled today in Newton.
