A Statesville man who was reported missing earlier this week and whose vehicle was found in Burke County, has been found safe. The vehicle belonging to 25-year-old Dustin Gray was found Monday night (September 9) off John's River Loop. The vehicle's key was in the ignition when it was found.
Burke County Emergency Services were contacted and organized a search. Members of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Burke County EMS Special Operations, Burke County Rescue, Chesterfield Fire Department, NC Wildlife, the NC Department of Corrections and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search utilizing a K9, and a drone. They were not able to find Mr. Gray.
On Thursday (September 12), shortly after 11:30 a.m., a man was spotted by a resident off of Johns River Road in Morganton. Upon arrival at the scene by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and EMS, the man was identified as Dustin Gray and was transported by EMS to a local medical facility.
An interview with Burke County detectives revealed that he had left his workplace in Statesville, drove to Burke County and did not want to be found. He advised he walked through the N.C. Wildlife Game Lands until he found a shed where he spent two nights, surviving off of water from the river and corn from the food plots in the fields.
