Granite Falls Teen Jailed on Arson and B&E Charges [UPDATED 2:15 p.m.]

19-year-old Austin Ryan Setzer of Hurricane Hill Road in Granite Falls was arrested by Caldwell Co. Sheriff's Officers yesterday (September 10) on felony counts of arson and breaking & entering.

Events leading to his arrest began yesterday afternoon when the Gamewell Fire Department responded to a fire call at an address on Ivey Stine Road in the Gamewell community. The fire was quickly brought under control.

Investigators with the Caldwell Co. Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was incendiary in nature and had multiple points of origin. Deputies responded and began an arson investigation.

Based on information obtained from witnesses at the scene, Investigators determined that Austin Ryan Setzer was responsible for the fire. Investigators also learned that the house was occupied at the time Setzer set the fire. Prior to the fire, Setzer made forcible entry into the residence, causing damage to various parts of the home.

Warrants for Setzer's arrest were issued. He was taken into custody without incident later in the day at his residence. Setzer was placed in the Caldwell Co. Detention Center under a $150,000 secured bond. A first appearance in District Court was scheduled today in Lenoir.

Investigators are consulting with the District Attorney. Additional criminal charges are possible.
