Burke County Sheriff Investigating Death of Infant

The Burke Co. Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the death of an infant earlier this week.

Last Wednesday (September 4), Sheriff’s Officers responded to Carolina Health Care System – Blue Ridge where an unresponsive two-month-old male had been brought to the Emergency Room by the child’s parents. The infant was transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.

Based on reports from the Emergency Department staff in Morganton and the staff at Levine’s, Investigators with the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Burke Co. Department of Social Services responded to Levine’s and launched an investigation. The infant passed away Monday (September 9).

Investigators have interviewed several witnesses and met with the Child Protection Team at Levine’s. The investigation is ongoing and will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office upon completion.
