46-year-old Erskine Wells Arnold of Summers Road in Morganton was arrested Tuesday (August 13) by Morganton Public Safety Officers. He's charged with felony hit and run with injury and is also charged with being a fugitive from South Carolina.
At approximately 9:30 Tuesday morning, Morganton Public Safety Officers responded to the area of Rand Street at West Fleming Drive to investigate a motor vehicle crash with injuries. When officers arrived, they found two vehicles, a 2004 Nissan Armada and a 2017 Ford Transit Van. Each vehicle was occupied by only the driver. Witnesses told police that a man left the scene right after after the crash. The driver of the Ford was complaining of neck pain.
The suspect, Arnold, was found near Mighty Dollar on West Fleming Drive where he was detained. During the investigation, it was determined that the Nissan, driven by Arnold, was traveling west on West Fleming Drive when the other driver failed to see before turning into the roadway from Rand Street. Rosas collided with Arnold near Rand Street at West Fleming Drive. After the collision, Arnold fled on foot.
Police suspected that Arnold was impaired while driving. In addition, he was a wanted person from Greenville, South Carolina. He was wanted on a fugitive warrant for first degree domestic violence. Arnold was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of his arrest. No other people involved in the accident were charged with felony offenses. Those injured were treated at the scene, nobody was brought to the hospital.
Arnold was transported to the Burke-Catawba District Confinement Facility to be held pending extradition to South Carolina. Bond for the felony hit and run charge was set at $3,000 secured. A District Court appearance was scheduled today (August 14).
