The Newton Fire Department will conduct a controlled burn on Northwest Boulevard this upcoming Saturday (February 16). Controlled burns are training exercises that allow firefighters to hone their skills for real emergencies. Several firefighting agencies from throughout the area have been invited to participate.
Beginning around 9 a.m. Saturday, firefighters will begin setting fires in a vacant house at 2616 Northwest Boulevard The fires will be extinguished and relit throughout the day. The exercise is expected to end during the afternoon. During the controlled burn, smoke will be visible throughout the area. Smoke will likely remain visible through the evening.
The controlled burn will be held at the future site of James River Equipment, a full-service equipment and tractor dealership scheduled to open this spring. The site was formerly occupied by Slimline Industries. If you have any questions, please contact the Newton Fire Department at 828-695-4314.
