Hickory Man Killed In Morning Crash That Closes McDonald Parkway

An investigation is being conducted into a fatal accident this morning (February 13) in Hickory. The crash involved a passenger car and a police vehicle and a Hickory man was killed in the wreck.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m. today, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the crash on McDonald Parkway at the intersection of 12th Ave Drive NE, also known as Spencer Road. The collision involved a passenger car and a Catawba County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle.

A 2003 Honda Civic was traveling west on 12th Ave Drive NE. The deputy was traveling north on McDonald Parkway in a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicles collided in the intersection. The Honda ran off the roadway and collided with a fence. The patrol vehicle came to rest on McDonald Parkway.

The Honda was operated by 27-year-old Hernan Cortez of Hickory. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with minor injuries and has since been released. There were no other passengers.

The Highway Patrol's Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene, they were assisting with the investigation. The intersection was expected to be closed until approximately 9:00 a.m., a detour was set up by officers.
