A 57-year-old inmate tried to commit suicide by hanging himself in his cell at the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center in Lincolnton today (February 4).

The man's cellmate was awakened by the sound of someone thrashing around. He discovered the victim with a part of a bed-sheet tied around his neck and the other end tied to the cell bars.

The cellmate immediately pushed the call button to alert the staff. Lincoln County E.M.S. arrived and took over lifesaving efforts. The victim was taken Atrium Health in Lincolnton. He was then transferred to Atrium Health in Charlotte for further treatment.

The inmate, whose identity has not been released, had been in jail since January 11 of this year on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon.
