53-year-old Robert Paul Shafer of Jamestown Road in Morganton was arrested by Burke County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with felony counts of larceny of a financial transaction card, obtaining money by false pretense, and being a fugitive from justice from Henry County, Virginia. He’s also charged with three misdemeanor counts of failure to appear on counts of obtaining property by false pretense in Henry County, and single misdemeanor counts of larceny in Guilford County and contempt of court in Henry County.
On January 23, 2019, Burke County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from a residence on Mountain Breeze Drive in Morganton. The victim reported the larceny of a credit card that had been used to make large purchases over several days. The case was assigned to Burke County detectives who developed Robert Paul Shafer as the suspect.
Shafer was located at his residence on Jamestown Road in Morganton, and arrested on an outstanding warrant for misdemeanor larceny from Guilford County. During an interview, Shaffer confessed to the Burke County investigator and was charged with felony financial card theft and felony obtaining property by false pretense. Further investigation determined Shafer had outstanding warrants in Henry County, Virginia.
Shafer was placed in the Burke-Catawba District Confinement Facility under a $10,000 secured bond on the Burke County warrant, a $1,000 secured bond on the Guilford County warrant, and is being held without bond on the fugitive warrant.
He was scheduled to appear in court Friday (February 1).
