26-year-old Rick Rashond Chambers of 9th Street, 25-year-old Shyheim Fitzhugh Millsaps of Kite Lane, and 23-year-old Martevis Jashawn Simpson of South Race Street, all from Statesville, were arrested Tuesday (December 4) by Iredell County Sheriff's Officers. Chambers and Millsaps are each charged with felony assault on a detention employee, (Chambers two counts and Millsaps one count). They're also charged with felony inciting to riot, fail to disperse on command and disorderly conduct. Simpson is charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.

According to a news release from the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, on Tuesday at approximately 7:45 p.m. an incident occurred inside the Iredell County Detention Center. Inmates were being allowed to visit with family and friends. This requires Detention Officers to escort inmates to and from the visitation rooms. While an inmate was being escorted back to their Housing Pod, Martevis Simpson allegedly became aggressive with the Detention Officer. As the Detention Officer was removing the handcuffs from Simpson he reportedly attacked the officer striking him with the handcuffs, causing cuts and other injuries.

Simpson was subdued by officers and placed back in cuffs. At this point, other inmates in the Housing Pod reportedly began reacting to this action by creating a disturbance. Detention Officers responded to other inmates becoming loud, hitting the glass in the door, and causing disturbances. Patrol Deputies and other law enforcement agencies were ask to respond to assist since multiple inmates were now involved.

Detention Officers entered the Housing Pod and took Shyheim Millsaps, who was one of the agitators. When the first officer approached Millsaps he refused to obey orders and reportedly attacked the officer. While officers were trying to subdue Millsaps, Chambers allegedly assaulted one of the officers. Other officers responded and both inmates were subdued and placed in handcuffs.

Millsaps was transported to by Iredell County EMS to be treated in part for exposure to Pepper Spray. It’s unclear if Millsaps and Chambers were working together trying to start a riot or each man acted alone. Four Detention Officers were reportedly injured. The investigation is continuing and additional charges are expected in this case.
