McDowell County Detectives are advising citizens to be aware of two telephone scams.
In one scam, a caller tells citizens a family member has been arrested and needs money to get out of jail. Capt. Shanon Smith advised citizens to never to send money, but to call the relative and confirm whether or not they need help. If the relative can’t be reached, citizens should call the jail where the relative is allegedly confined.
In the other scam, a caller advises residents that they’ve won the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes and they need to buy a gift card from CVS and send it to a certain address in order to claim their prize.
