At about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the collision which occurred about a half-mile south of I-40. A 1997 Buick Century four-door passenger car driven by Cody Austin Myers was traveling south on Henry River Road, while a 2006 Ford F-250 four-door pickup truck driven by 65-year-old James Robert Abernathy of Hickory was traveling north on the same road. According to a witness and evidence at the scene, the Buick crossed the double yellow line and collided with the Ford.
Two children in the rear seat of the Buick were ejected from the vehicle. There were child restraints seats in the vehicle; however, due to severe damage from the impact of the crash, the seats were ejected from the car. The driver of the Ford and a teen passenger sustained minor injuries. Troopers in Burke County along with the NCSHP Collision Reconstruction Unit returned to the scene Thursday as the investigation continues.
