Two people, including a four-month-old child, were killed Wednesday afternoon (August 8) in a two-vehicle crash in Burke County. Another child was seriously injured.
At about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the collision near Hildebran on Henry River Road, about a half-mile south of I-40. A 1997 Buick Century four-door passenger car driven by 21-year-old Cody Austin Myers of Hickory was traveling south on Henry River Road, while a 2006 Ford F-250 four-door pickup truck driven by 65-year-old James Robert Abernathy of Hickory was traveling north on the same road. According to a witness and evidence at the scene, the Buick crossed the double yellow line and collided with the Ford.
Two children in the rear seat of the Buick were ejected from the vehicle. There were child restraints seats in the vehicle; however, due to severe damage from the impact of the crash, the seats were ejected from the car. The four-month-old child died at the scene. Cody Austin Myers later passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. A seventeen-month-old child was critically injured. The child was transported to a trauma center by helicopter. The driver of the Ford and a teen passenger sustained minor injuries.
The Highway Patrol’s Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to assist in the ongoing investigation. The roadway was closed for several hours.
