More details have been released in the arrest of 53-year-old Johnny Lee Roland of 19th Street S.W. in Hickory. Roland has been charged by Long View Police with one count of murder.
He is accused of killing 53-year-old Johnny Edward McGill of 20th Street S.W. Police responded to reports of a stabbing at McGill’s residence at 6:54 last night (June 1). Officers found McGill suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was taken to the Hickory Regional Airport and airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Lincoln County. Within hours, authorities were notified that Mr. McGill had passed away.
The two men were involved in an altercation that led to the stabbing. Police would not speculate regarding the cause of the dispute. The two men were acquainted, but not related. They lived about a half a block apart.
Roland was treated and released at Frye Regional Medical Center for injuries received during the altercation.
Roland was jailed early this morning in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility where he is being held without bond. A first appearance in District Court was set for today in Newton.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
