Newton Police are investigating a shooting incident that injured an elementary school aged child and an adult male at a residence on North Ervin Avenue in Newton.
The juvenile was shot in the hand and was treated and released at Catawba Valley Medical Center Friday night at about 8:30. He is at home recovering with his family.
The suspect, 27-year-old Christopher Shawn Davis of North Edgemont Avenue in Gastonia, is listed in critical but stable condition at Carolina’s Medical Center. Davis is not able to communicate and has not been available for questioning by Investigators. He is currently with family at the hospital.
The incident unfolded as Officers arrived at the scene Friday night and found a white male, later identified as Christopher Davis, lying face down in the front yard suffering from a gunshot wound.
Witnesses told Officers that the white male suspect got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend, who lives at the residence. During the argument, the suspect pulled out a pistol and began firing at the residence. It’s not clear if Davis was shooting at a specific target or if he was firing randomly.
The white male juvenile was hit in the hand as he was standing in his bedroom. After shooting into the house, the suspect turned the gun on himself.
Newton Police, with assistance from the Catawba Co. Department of Social Services, are continuing to conduct interviews with family members and witnesses.
No charges have been filed at this time.
