A firefighter in Burke County was killed after being struck by a vehicle early this morning (October 9). According to a news release issued this morning by the Triple Community Fire Department, Sunday (October 8) at approximately 11:53 p.m., Triple Community firefighters were dispatched to a call for service for a tree blocking the eastbound and part of the westbound side of Highway 70 East near the Drexel intersection.
One Firefighter responded to the scene with an apparatus and another in his personal vehicle. The Firefighters were in the process of clearing debris from the roadway just after midnight when a vehicle traveling eastbound on Hwy 70 struck one of the Firefighters. 40-year-old firefighter Jason Keith Hensley was killed instantly upon impact.
An investigation into the accident is being conducted by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. No arrangements for Firefighter Hensley have been made at this time.
