A teenager is dead after troopers said he was hit by a driver overnight on Interstate 40 in Conover. WHKY's Fentress Fountain reports that the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told her that 18-year-old Jose Torrez was lying in the roadway when he was struck.
Investigators told Fentress that the accident happened at 10:43 p.m. Wednesday in the westbound lanes, near First Street West. Troopers say the driver was entering the interstate on a sharp curve and hit the teenager. The Highway Patrol is trying to figure out why Torres was in the roadway. Investigators say it's possible he fell or was pushed from the bridge above the ramp.
Investigators said Torres appeared to have injuries that occurred before being struck by the vehicle. The driver did not have time to stop so no charges are pending. Fentress Fountain will have details on this incident on tonight's WHKY-TV News at 5:30 and 10:00.
