Lenoir-Rhyne University’s commencement ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 16. More than 260 students will be presented with their degrees. Commencement for L.R.’s graduate students will take place on Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in the P.E. Monroe Auditorium. More than 60 master’s degree graduates will receive their diplomas.
At the May 16 commencement ceremony, Lenoir-Rhyne will award an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Charles M. Snipes (L.R. Class of 1958).
Snipes has been involved with a number of professional and charitable organizations, including the Sipe’s Orchard Home, the Salvation Army, the United Way, the Piedmont Boy Scout Council and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
In addition to serving on numerous boards and task forces, Snipes has also spent nearly 30 years on the University’s Board of Trustees, including seven years as Board Chair.
Snipes began his career in the banking industry in 1958. He retired in 2008 after climbing the ranks and serving as the Bank of Granite’s CEO and Chairman of the Board. During his time at the bank, its assets grew from $67 million to $1.2 billion.
Snipes is a member of the L.R. Founders and Heritage Societies, a charter member of the President’s Society, the Business Council and the Piedmont Educational Foundation. In 2002, Lenoir-Rhyne’s business department became The Charles M. Snipes School of Business.
