Congressman Patrick McHenry will present a grant check for over $226,000 to the Conover Fire Department on Monday (May 5) at 3:30 p.m. The presentation will take place at the Conover Fire Department, 1225 Conover Boulevard East in Conover. The grant is part of the SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response) program. The funds will be used by the Conover Fire Department to hire three new full-time firefighters.
Congressman McHenry will be joined by Conover City Manager Donald Duncan and other local elected officials when presenting the check to Conover Fire Chief Mark Hinson.
A panel of fire experts at the Department of Homeland Security awards Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) through a competitive review process. Congressman McHenry hosts workshops for EMS and fire departments in the 10th Congressional District to help guide personnel through the process and give them an inside view of what the committee looks for.
The workshops are taught by Cherryville Fire Chief Jeff Cash, a nationally recognized expert in his field and former member of Homeland Security’s AFG review committee.
The Conover Fire Department is the second 10th District department to receive AFG checks this year.
