According to published reports, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is considering a tax on drivers in the state for every mile they drive. The state said it is losing money on the gas tax because cars are becoming more fuel-efficient.
The NCDOT expects funding to fall $1.7 billion short over the next decade. Some states have installed GPS technology to log cars’ mileage.
North Carolina could consider reading each vehicle’s odometer during yearly inspections, but that would not take into account miles driven outside the state.
