The Patrick Beaver Memorial Library will host a classic movie night featuring Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. The 1935 movie version was directed by Max Reinhardt. Among the stars are Dick Powell as Lysander, James Cagney as Bottom, Olivia de Havilland as Hermia and Mickey Rooney as Puck.
The classic film night is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Popcorn will be provided. Attendees will receive a free copy of the book, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
The movie night is part of an effort involving eight area library systems that have partnered for “Whole Lotta Shakespeare Goin’ On,” a community reading project focused on the works of William Shakespeare. The project commemorates the 450th birthday of the Bard. It’s designed to encourage reading throughout the region. The Hickory Public and Catawba County library systems are focusing on the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Information about other Shakespearean programs during April may be found on both websites at www.hickorync.gov/library and www.catawbacountync.gov/library.
