For the second straight year Lenoir-Rhyne and Lander opened the season on the opening night of the Peach Belt Conference/South Atlantic Conference Challenge. This year, 21st ranked Lander jumped out to a 28-8 lead after one quarter and never looked back for a 92-65 victory.
The Bearcats were red hot from the beginning helping them grabbed a 28-8 lead after one. Lander shot 59.4% from the field for the game.
The Bears were lead by Kennedy Weigt and Madeline Hardy with 12 points each. Weigt got the Bears going in the second quarter scoring 10 of her 12 points in the quarter including two three pointers to cut the halftime lead to 17.
Lander started the second half with a 29-15 run to pull away for the victory.
64 of Lander's 92 points came from the paint as Lander actually doubled up the Bears in points in the paint (64-32).
The Bears shot only 37.7% from the field including 3 of 18 from three.
Despite the loss, 11 different Bears would score. Freshman Ashley Woodroffe added 11 points, three assists and two rebounds in her collegiate debut. Freshman Blair Barefoot (eight points) and Laney Fox (two points) each scored in their first collegiate game.
Sophomore Kiara Moore had a career high seven rebounds in the game. The Bears did have 12 offensive rebounds, led by Moore with five. The 12 offensive rebounds led to seven second chance points for the Bears.
Lander is coming off a 74-72 win at Clemson in a exhibition game on October 29th. Lander squeaked by the Bears last year 55-53 to open the season. The Bears still lead the all-time series 5-4.
This is the second straight year Lander, USC Aiken, Carson-Newman and LR have started the year in the PBC/SAC Challenge.
The Bears are 0-1 to start the season. They will return to the court Saturday in the second day of the PBC/SAC Challenge. Bears will take on USC Aiken at 1pm.
