Appalachian State University men's tennis (1-5) suffered a 4-0 setback to a formidable East Carolina (5-1) team inside the ECU Tennis Facility.
The Mountaineers came in facing a tough Pirate team that has won 25 of its last 31 matches at home. Appalachian fell in the doubles portion before ECU claimed three matches in singles.
App State's Zion Heaven (Ewa Beach, HI/Florida Virtual) and Afonso Viana (Rua Deviera, Portugal/Cebes Porto Portugal) teamed up on Court No. 1 but was edged by Ronny Georgi and Wisse Jonker, 6-3. Alex Brea and Milo Bargeron suffered a 6-0 decision to Diogo Marques and Austin Allen, 6-0. Alex Pavkovich (Queensland, Australia/Mansfield State) and Campbell Stone (Raleigh, N.C./ Needham B. Broughton) were tied, 4-4, with Simon Labbe and Austin Allen, but went unfinished.
Pavkovich fell to Jonker, 6-0, 6-1 before Viana was topped by Vlad Anghel, 6-3, 6-1. Bargeron was the final match finished. The junior won the first set before Marques collected the next two sets to complete the match. Heaven and Stone's match went unfinished.
App State will return to action next weekend for a pair of matches. The Mountaineers will face Furman on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Greenville, S.C. before they take on UNC Asheville the following day on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Asheville.
