For the second game in a row, the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball lost in the final seconds. Anderson came away with a 71-70 victory inside Shuford Gym on Saturday evening, giving the Bears consecutive one-possession losses in the same week.
The Trojans' Gage Ellis followed up an air balled 3-point attempt and laid it in as the shot clock expired to give Anderson a 71-68 lead with just under 12 seconds to play. A pair of Jon Jean free throws cut the lead to one before Anderson missed the front end of a one-and-one. However, the Bears were unable to convert a sideline out of bounds and Anderson secured the season sweep.
The Bears went cold, shooting a season-worst 36.5 percent from the field and 19.0 percent from long range. The Trojans dominated the lane, outscoring the Bears 36-22 in the paint.
Senior guard Djibril Diallo finished with 23 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Diallo was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line and finished with six rebounds, three assists and two steals before fouling out late in regulation.
Jon Jean (12 points) and Cory Thomas (10 points) also finished in double figures for the Bears. Anderson was paced by 14 points from Gage Ellis and 12 from Randall Shaw.
The visitors committed 22 fouls and had two players foul out.
LR drops to fourth place with the loss, half-a-game ahead of Wingate.
Darius Simmons saw his consecutive made 3-point streak come to an end with a misfire Saturday. Prior to his miss against Anderson, Simmons had knocked down eight straight triples.
The Bears are 16-6 overall and now 9-5 in the South Atlantic Conference. L-R will stay at home on Wednesday night and host Wingate at 8 p.m. with sole possession of fourth place on the line.
