The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team opened its 2019 season with a sweep at Chowan on Saturday afternoon. The Bears won by scores of 6-2 and 5-2 thanks to some strong pitching performances.
Reigning South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Year Emily Kenley picked up where she left off last season, limiting the Hawks to just two runs on six hits over her seven innings of work. Kenley put up zeroes in the first five innings before giving up a 2-run homer in the sixth.
Erin Boone went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the 2-spot of the LR lineup. Boone homered in her second at bat and also stole a base.
Talon LaClair and Leanna Sherrill each drove in a pair of runs. Sherrill's 2-RBI single in the seventh extended the lead from 4-2 to 6-2 and secured the victory.
LaClair's RBI single in the top of the third broke a scoreless tie and plated Boone.
LR would score twice in the in the fourth inning. Savannah Moorefield singled and Boone hit a sacrifice fly to left as the Bears grabbed a 3-0 lead.
With the lead cut to 3-2, Mackensi Swain brought home two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with an RBI double.
Brandi Parks earned the win in the circle, allowing three hits and two runs to go with five strikeouts.
Boone went 5-for-6 with four runs, a HR and a walk on the afternoon.
In last year's 48-win season, the Bears dropped their season opener. LR fell 6-2 to West Alabama.
The Bears are 2-0. L-R will head to Clearwater, Fla. to compete in a tournament. LR opens play with a matchup against Hillsdale College on Friday at 10 a.m.
