The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team battled Wingate and came away with a 67-64 road victory on Wednesday evening. The Bears earned their second straight win inside Cuddy Arena and move to 5-1 in road games on the season.
The game was tightly contested throughout. The Bears largest lead of the night was nine points and Wingate never led by more than four.
Cory Thomas paced the Bears with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Thomas added six boards and a pair of steals.
Djibril Diallo was held to a season-low five points but contributed in other ways. The senior pulled down a season-best 10 rebounds.
Jon Jean would add 12 points and five rebounds to go along with four assists. Jean scored nine of his 12 points in the first half and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.
LR's stingy defense held the reigning SAC Player of the Week Marco Haskins to 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Haskins entered the game leading Divisions I, II and III in 3-point FG% but LR held the senior to just 1-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Point guard Freddie Jackson led the hosts with 18 points and completed the double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs held a 41-33 edge on the glass but were held to their lowest scoring output of the season.
Wingate had a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that hit off the front of the rim as the Bears secured the win. The biggest play of the game came on the defensive end. With 22 seconds, the Bears led by three points but a bad pass resulted in a Wingate steal. As the Bulldogs attempted an outlet pass, Thomas came away with a huge steal which ended up being the turning point.
LR's 3-point defense was the difference tonight. The Bears held Wingate to 6-of-24 from long range, the worst shooting percentage from the 3-point line of the season for the Bulldogs.
LR improves to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. The Bears are back in action on Saturday as they return to Shuford Gym to host Mars Hill. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
