Appalachian State University men's soccer (6-2-2) fell to UAB (4-6-2) in a tight-knit affair, 1-0, on Wednesday evening in Birmingham, Ala. at BBVA Compass Field.

The Mountaineers and Blazers played an even match where both teams had the same number of shot attempts (8) and shots on goal (6). However, the only difference was UAB's goal by Adam Brooker in the 87th minute that gave UAB the eventual win.

"Tough one tonight to lose in the final five minutes," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "Credit to a well-coached team in UAB. We will continue to learn from these great experiences, get better and more prepared for the next game."

App State fired a strike with just 10 seconds left but couldn't convert the goal that would have tied the game and force overtime.

Charlie Baird (Nottinghamshire, England/Outwood Academy) led the Black and Gold with a personal-high three shots on goal and a career-best four shot attempts. Parker Cross (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek), Austin Hill (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance), and Aldo Tarantini (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) also chipped in with a SOG.

Jake Chasteen (Boone, N.C./Watauga) stopped five shots on the evening, while his scoreless streak ended at 329 minutes.

App State started off aggressive with two shots that were on frame in the first 10 minutes on back-to-back attempts by Hill and Baird.

Chasteen came up with a pair of saves in the first half, including a stop with five minutes left in the first period that kept the game tied 0-0.

Another early attack by Baird resulted in two shots on goal in the first 11 minutes of the second half. But James Teal stopped both shots before Chasteen answered with a save of his own on a UAB attempt.

Cross' shot that was on target was stopped, which would have given App the 1-0 edge. It was the final attempt for the Black and Gold before UAB's header broke the tie.

Appalachian recorded at least five shots on goal for the eighth time in 11 contests. It's only the first time this season the Apps didn't score on one of their five attempted shots that were on target.

Appalachian will look to bounce back as it returns to Sun Belt play at Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m.
