The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team will not be traveling to New York this weekend for its scheduled tournament appearance due to the threat of Hurricane Florence.
The Red Hawks were originally scheduled to play in the Monroe College Invitational in New Rochelle, N.Y. but the decision was made early Wednesday to cancel the planned tournament trip, which included a flight from Charlotte Douglas Airport.
“With the change in the storm last night, we are concerned for the safety of players traveling as well as the return in a timely and safe manner,” said Catawba Valley Community College Athletic Director Nicholas Schroeder.
The CVCC volleyball team had originally planned to fly out Thursday for its tournament appearance, which was to take place this Friday and Saturday. However, the decision was made earlier in the week to push that flight up to Wednesday in anticipation of the storm.
However, with Florence shifting further south early Wednesday morning, the decision was made by CVCC officials to cancel the trip altogether.
The Red Hawks return to action on Monday when they travel to USC Lancaster for a conference game in Lancaster, S.C. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
