Sophomore Annette Jarosz has become the first Appalachian State player to win the MAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week award. The conference announced the student-athlete's selection on Tuesday.

Jarosz earns the honor after her busy weekend at Davidson and James Madison. The Elkridge, Md. native played every minute between the two Mountaineers' contests, helping lead the Black and Gold to a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory in double overtime over the Wildcats.

"I'm really excited for Annette to receive this award," head coach Meghan Dawson said. "She has worked extremely hard so far this fall. She's the core of our defense and is getting better every day."

The sophomore's highlight of the weekend came in the first overtime period at Davidson, where Jarosz made a defensive save to preserve the 2-2 scoreline. Another sophomore, Veerle Van Heertum, scored the game-winner in the second overtime.

On Sunday, Jarosz served a pivotal role in shutting out the JMU offense in the first half. The student-athlete also guarded the net when the Mountaineers pulled junior goalkeeper Rachel Gaines late in the contest.

The sophomore has started all six games for Appalachian this season, recording a shot on goal against Georgetown on Aug. 26.

Jarosz joins junior Ali Williams as the only two players to win a MAC Field Hockey Player of the Week award. Williams received the MAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week award in Appalachian's inaugural Mid-American Conference campaign in 2017.

The Black and Gold (4-2) return to action Tuesday at North Carolina at 6 p.m.
