For the second consecutive year, redshirt sophomore Rachel Gaines was selected to the 2018-19 Senior U.S. Women's National Indoor Team as announced by USA Field Hockey on Tuesday.
"I'm really proud of Rachel," said head coach Meghan Dawson. "She diligently works on her fitness, strength and skills to push her game to the next level. She never quits and always expects more of herself. I am so proud of her and her continuing to accomplish her goals."
Gaines was one of three athletes added to the roster on Tuesday after attending an indoor camp in Spring City, Pennsylvania, this past weeked. She and 17 other U.S. athletes will train through the summer and fall before competing in an international tournament in Europe over the New Year.
"I'm very excited to continue to represent Appalachian and our field hockey team at the highest level," Gaines said. "After the Indoor Team's success qualifying for the World Cup this past February, I am thrilled to continue training with this phenomenal group of women. There is no doubt that we will continue to push each other to become better each day."
In just two seasons between the posts for App State, Gaines has logged over 2,400 minutes while starting all 35 games she has played. The Kettering, Ohio, native has accumulated 278 saves, which places her tenth on the all-time saves list for App State goalkeepers. In 2017, she posted four shutouts with 159 saves.
