Against the strongest field of teams Appalachian State has faced this season, sophomore Tripp Summerlin turned in a solid performance to help the men’s golf team to a 10th-place showing at the Stitch Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon.
Summerlin carded a second-round 67, matching his career-best collegiate round, that helped him to an overall tie for 23rd in the individual standings with a three-round score of even-par 216 (76-67-73).
The Mountaineers placed 10th in the team standings behind such teams as Duke, Wake Forest and NC State, which are all ranked among the top 35 in the country. App State put together a team score of 889 (305-283-301).
“Just like last week, we had one good round and two not-so-good rounds,” head coach Bo Redman said. “Tripp is starting to play well again. The good thing is we played with some of the top teams in the country on that second day. The other two days, we kind of got in our own way.
“We’re looking forward to going to conference and showing what we can do. That’s what we’ve been working toward. We’re still a little inconsistent, so we’re going to work on that and get in some good practices over the next four days before we leave for Florida.”
The other App State golfers who contributed to the team score were Chance Watson at 224 (77-72-75), Alex Burris at 225 (78-73-74) and Walter Brinker at 228 (75-71-82).
That completes the regular season for App State. Next up is the 2018 Sun Belt Championship, held April 22-25 in Sandestin, Fla.
