The Chowan Women's Basketball Team (2-0) remained unbeaten on the season with a 74-68 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (1-2), 74-68, Monday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
The Hawks used balance scoring – with five players in double figures – in the victory. Chowan was led by Dhyamond Crenshaw (Burke, Va.) with 17 points while Joanne Williams (Norfolk, Va.) tallied a double-double – 10 points and 12 rebounds – in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior forward Madi Suddreth (Taylorsville, N.C.) with a game-high 21 points while junior guard Kendall Toineeta (Cherokee, N.C.) neared a triple-double again – 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists – despite the loss.
The Bears cut a 16-point deficit to two points at 70-68 on a three-point play by Suddreth with 23 seconds left but the Hawks scored the final four points to take the victory.
The Hawks took control in the first quarter as they outscored the Bears by a 24-15 margin and forced Lenoir-Rhyne into 12 turnovers. Chowan also owned the free throw line: connecting on 22-of-36 free throw attempts.
Suddreth leads the team at 17.3 points per game.
Lenoir-Rhyne will hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, November 15, against Winston-Salem State in Winston-Salem, N.C., beginning at 6:00 p.m.
