Appalachian State University field hockey dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 4 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field. Taylor Cimbalist scored Appalachian's only goal of the match, her third of the season.
North Carolina (2-4, 0-1 ACC) scored its first goal in the the 7th minute, but Appalachian (2-4) turned up the defense with many blocked shots and broke up multiple offensive plays created by the Tar Heels. The Apps held off the Heels offensively until Megan DuVernois found Meredith Sholder to score UNC's second goal in the 23rd minute.
In 25th minute, Meghan Smart tallied App State's first and only shot of the first half, but that shot went wide of the goal. Gaines recorded her sixth save of the first half with just 30 seconds remaining to go into halftime with the score 2-0.
The Tar Heels came out of the gates fast in the second half with two quick goals in under three minutes to go up 4-0. In the 50th and 58th minute, North Carolina scored its final two goals of the match, but the Mountaineers would answer nine minutes later.
Out of a penalty corner, Cimbalist responded with a goal of her own. In the 67th minute, the senior midfielder struck a shot just over UNC's goalkeeper from an assist by Melissa Nobile.
Throughout the match, North Carolina out-hustled the Mountaineers in total shots (26-6), shots on goal (19-2) and corners (10-2).
Goalkeeper Gaines collected a season-high 13 saves on the day and now owns 53 total saves this season.
On Friday, Sept. 15, the Mountaineers will host Kent State in their first Mid-American Conference match at 2 p.m. App State will play another MAC-foe in Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Sept. 17. That match is set for a noon start.
